Dental pain and emergencies can happen when you least expect them, but quick, professional care can make all the difference. If you have a toothache, facial swelling, a broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, or are bleeding after a dental procedure, you need urgent help from a dentist, not a GP.

At Oakley Dental, we prioritise emergency patients and aim to see you as soon as possible. If you’re experiencing dental pain or discomfort, please call our Prestwich clinic before 10 am on 0161 773 0111, and we will do everything we can to offer you a same-day appointment.

We understand how distressing dental emergencies can be. Our experienced and compassionate team is here to relieve your pain quickly, prevent further damage, and restore your smile with effective, long-lasting solutions.

While we currently do not offer weekend emergency services, we are actively working on extending our availability to include weekends in the near future.

What to do if you have toothache

If you are in pain, call our Prestwich practice on 0161 773 0111 as early in the day as you can. While you wait to be seen:

Rinse gently with warm salt water.
Take over-the-counter pain relief you would normally use, following the instructions on the pack.
Avoid very hot, cold or sugary food and drinks.
Do not place aspirin or painkillers directly on the gum.

If you are unsure whether your symptoms count as a dental emergency, give us a call. We are happy to advise and guide you on the next steps. We welcome emergency patients from across Prestwich, Whitefield, Bury and Greater Manchester.

Go to A&E or call 999 if you have swelling that affects your breathing, swallowing or eye, heavy bleeding that will not stop, or a serious injury to your face. When we are closed, call NHS 111 for urgent advice.

Dental emergencies we can help with

Severe toothache

Persistent or throbbing pain that is stopping you eating, sleeping or working.

Facial swelling

Swelling around a tooth, the gum or the face, which can be a sign of infection.

Broken or chipped tooth

A cracked, broken or chipped tooth, with or without pain.

Lost filling or crown

A filling or crown that has come out, leaving the tooth sensitive or sharp.

Knocked-out tooth

Call straight away. Hold the tooth by the crown and keep it in milk until you are seen.

Bleeding after treatment

Bleeding after an extraction or other dental procedure that has not settled.

Go to A&E or call 999 for swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop or a serious facial injury. Out of hours, call NHS 111.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Toothache, swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or crown, or bleeding after extraction are all common dental emergencies.

Can I go to my GP with a dental emergency?

No. GPs are not equipped to deal with dental problems. You should always contact your dentist in an emergency.

What if I need help outside clinic hours?

We do not currently offer a weekend emergency service, but we are working to introduce this soon. In the meantime, call us as early as possible during weekday mornings.

Absolutely Brilliant Care – I Cannot Recommend Imania Enough! I have always been extremely phobic of dental treatment and have avoided going for years, but from the moment I arrived I was put completely at ease. Imania is so kind, gentle and unbelievably patient – she never rushes, always explains exactly what she is doing every step of the way, and never makes you feel silly for being nervous. She plays calming music throughout your appointment, and uses plastic instruments wherever possible to make things feel less daunting. This is the first dentist I've been to in over 10 years so understandably I was extremely nervous for my consultation and to hear about the work I'd inevitably need doing, but I was put at ease and everything explained clearly to me, with the reasoning work the work that needed to be done shown on X-Rays. I've since had 2 subsequent appointments for fillings and composite bonding and can't speak more highly of Dr Alina and Stephanie, who've done great work both in terms of the actual dental work that's been done, and for making it as pleasant an experience as possible. I would highly recommend Oakley Dental, especially for folks like me who are a bit anxious about the dentist. Shout-out also to the reception team who are always warm and friendly.
